Winona Ryder Explains Why She's Afraid of the Internet [Video]

Last month, we told you that Winona Ryder has never used the Internet. Tonight, during a Late Night interview with Jimmy Fallon, Ryder explained why: she's afraid that, while Googling, she'll "suddenly be a member of Al-Qaeda." Buh? Watch inside. More »

Wikimedia reaches its $16 million goal, Wikipedia to remain ad-free

Jimmy Wales
The foundation behind Wikipedia, Wikimedia, has reached its goal of $16 million in donations, more than doubling the $7.5 million raised in 2009. Over half a million people donated for an average donation of around $22.

The donations are for one purpose: to keep Wikipedia ad-free, and having reached its goal, Wikipedia remains the only top-10 site on the Web that is free of ads and funded entirely by donations. The best bit, though, is that even the whole donation process has a Wiki. You can see how they tested various slogans, and just how successful the "Jimmy appeal" was, compared to the other possible banners. Finally, if you're really into this kind of thing, you can see a graph that documents the daily donations from 2007 through to the end of 2010.

In other news, Wikipedia will celebrate its 10th anniversary on January 15th, and if you want a piece of birthday cake, there are parties being held all over the world. Be aware that not all of the events are on the 15th, though!

Verizon iPhone first hands-on! (update: video)

We just got a look at the Verizon version of the iPhone 4. Guess what? It's just like an iPhone 4! There's no custom pre-loaded Verizon software (like VCAST or some such bloatware), just that mobile hotspot tweak in the settings menu. There's also no Verizon branding on the phone, though that's hardly a surprise given Apple's hatred of all logos that aren't its own. The only real physical difference we can find are those tweaked CDMA-compatible antennas running around the edge -- four in all, placed symmetrically and bumping down the volume / mute buttons. Interestingly, the phone is running iOS version 4.2.5, so perhaps that mobile hotspot functionality will make its way over to other iPhones when they sync up on iOS updates. We did try a speed test, clearing the cache and loading various sites simultaneously on the Verizon phone and our AT&T device, and while there were variations in the load times, there were too many external factors to really make a judgment call just yet.

So What?s So Special About The Verizon iPhone? Personal Hotspots.

Yes, Verizon is getting the iPhone 4. And other than the fact that it will work on Verizon's 3G CDMA network, it will look a lot like . . . AT&T's iPhone 4. It will have a retina display, FaceTime, a 5 megapixel camera, HD video recording, and an Apple A4 chip. But it will also have one new feature exclusive to Verizon dubbed "Personal Hotspots." The Verizon iPhone will let you create a personal hotspot and share your data connection via WiFi with up to five other devices, such as laptops or other cell phones. It is much like Verizon's popular Mifi data cards which allow users to share their wireless broadband with other people, and now you can do that with the iPhone, and tether your laptop to it. AT&T also allows tethering, but you can only tether one other device through a USB or Bluetooth connection. Connecting via WiFi is just easier and supports more devices.

Real-time motion tracking software plays a mean game of hide-and-seek (video)

Motion tracking software? Yeah, it's pretty old hat, but steps are being taken each day to take the technology to a place it has never been before. Overly dramatic? Sure, but we doubt you'll have much room to complain after peeking the video just past the break. Tipster Alexandre is responsible for the demonstration that you'll find there, showing off an application that can track an object that you select in real-time, with a single observation / image being enough to kick things off. It can handle zooms, object size changes, occlusion and temporary disappearances, and it's merely a mystery when something like this will get integrated into your motion gaming system of choice. Fingers crossed for "soon," right?

[Thanks, Alexandre]

Metro Home brings a little Windows Phone 7 style to your desktop

HTC Home is a nice desktop implementation of HTC's shiny Android homescreen widgets. Suppose, however, you prefer the typographical simplicity of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. Well, you're in luck: HTC Home's developer has just released Metro Home for Windows.

Metro Home is a portable, customizable desktop widget (remixed from HTC Home) which can display the date and time, local weather conditions, and a short range forecast. It's also got a small picture display window like the one you can utilize on the Windows Phone 7 homescreen. Right now, if you want to change the default path you'll need to do some manual hacking as described by the developer -- or you can drop some files into the Metro_Home\Widgets\WeatherClock\Pictures folder.

The .Net 4.0 framework is required, so make sure you've got it installed prior to launching Metro Home.

Attach Lego Bricks to This iPhone Case [Lego]

iPhone cases are pretty damn boring, they're like a wasteland of silicone and plastic sameness. Not this one! This case is awesome. The SmallWorks BrickCase ditches those tired materials for Lego, turning your iPhone 4 into a playground for Lego bricks. More »
