Internet Explorer 9 RC download links go live

If you've been waiting to try Internet Explorer 9 until the release candidate was made available, wait no more! Microsoft has posted the 32- and 64-bit downloads for both Windows 7 and Vista.

If the rumors are correct, the IE9 RC will be made officially available later today -- in which case, watch out for a lot more Internet Explorer 9 content on Download Squad over the next few days.

Khan Academy and BitTorrent partner to deliver P2P educational video

Despite what some detractors say, torrents have plenty of legitimate uses -- one of which is helping organizations distribute digital content at little or no cost. That's especially important for a non-profit like Khan Academy, which is why its partnership with BitTorrent Inc. makes perfect sense.

Khan Academy is a provider of free, online educational videos. A wide range of subjects are covered, including physics, biology, trigonometry, calculus, and economics. The academy's vault currently includes more than 2,000 videos, and all are now accessible via BitTorrent apps. Founder Salman Khan told TorrentFreak, "BitTorrent is a great platform to help us fulfill our mission of providing world-class education to anyone, anywhere."

If you've got either uTorrent or BitTorrent Mainline installed, just install the Khan Academy app and get studying! Best of all, you'll also be helping out by seeding content and giving back to the community while you watch.

We all wheeze a little from time to time, at least we do when we've fallen off the fitness wagon and are trying desperately to climb back on. For some it's a little more serious than that, and for those prone to dangerous bouts of asthma Siemens AG has a bit of hope. It's developed a portable sensor that can detect minute increases of nitric oxide in a patient's breath, particles that serve as a sign of an impending asthma attack. The user can then use that information to ingest the correct amount of anti-inflammatory meds. The device is said to be about the size of a cellphone, though unfortunately Siemens didn't specify a model. Like, are we talking a Veer here or a king-sized Nexus S? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, these new rules may affect music streaming apps and movie streaming apps, but first and foremost they are aimed at print publishers who were hoping to port their existing subscription business models over to the iPad. The big publishers and other media companies with substantial subscription businesses don't like the prospect of handing over 30 percent of their revenues in perpetuity to Apple. What they like even less is losing the direct relationship with their customers, and all the data that comes along with that. (Whoever owns the billing relationship owns the customer, after all). But the one thing they fear most of all is Apple's pricing power. The refrain I've heard from a couple of publishing industry insiders is: "How do we know next year Apple won't be taking 50%?"
